Zippo Lighters: From War Zones to Home Grills, etc.

Zippo lighters have gone tame after years in the hellish war zones in Normandy, Philippines, and Vietnam. These provided thousands of young soldiers a measure of comfort during their darkest hours and lighted up moments of calm and victory. During these infamous years of the 1940s, the manufacturer produced black crackle lighters; instead of brass, the lighters were made of steel and sealed with black protective coating against rusting.

Hundreds of thousands of Zippo lighters were conscripted to the army to find their way to rucksacks and pockets and battle-weary lighters have crude engravings of names of which one is the now famous Walter Nader lighter.

The Vietnam soldiers, belonging to the rock and roll generation, had snatches of songs, philosophy, and sarcasm cut onto their chrome lighters, spawning the 2004 Zippo Songs: Airs of War and Lunacy by Phil Kline, a New York based composer.
